I've been looking at paying markets for fiction of late having some odd bits and pieces sitting in my files that may be publishable. I found an interesting discussion here about remuneration. Although it is specifically about literary markets on the other side of the Atlantic it was an interesting insight into why so many mags and journals - literary or otherwise - offer no monetary payment or only token payments.

Oh and this from 2008 when The Willesden Herald ompetition judges refused to award the prize despite having a short list. I found myself agreeing with  the end of the article and it was interesting to read of one poetry judge who says in the comments they found it easy to whittel a shortlist form 100's of entries. Zadie Smith - one of the judges - had this to say on her blog about the dearth of good writing submitted for the comp.
